With the help and guidance of friends in social work and counseling, I came to the conclusion that in too many cases the source of the unhappiness I saw in many young people could be found in the home. In fact, the home itself was unhappy. The words and illustrations on this blog are offered as a way to share what I found and to give hope to young people in unhappy homes.

Facing verbal attacks
This famous picture is from the 1950s. The young black woman is on her way to a school that was all-white before the Supreme Court it desegregated. The photograph ran in newspapers all over the world for a few reasons: This was the first day of school after desegregation, the expression on the black student's face and the expression on the face of the white student just behind her. What is so inspirational about this scene is the black student stayed focused on what she wanted to accomplish. She wanted the same education the country was offering the white students. If she had responded to verbal attacks from the student behind her she probably would have been killed by the crowd. It might be good to think on this when under verbal assault at home, at school, wherever. In the end, this student was the most powerful person on that day because she got what she wanted and the haters didn't.
